Hektoen International

Call for submissions

General medical humanities topics    We are accepting articles on medical history, medicine and literature, art history, anthropology, ethics, artwork and poems.  Please note that you may not be considered for publication until January 2014.

What do we publish?

Hektoen International accepts for consideration articles that explore medicine and the healing arts through the lens of the humanities, exploring such disciplines as history, art, anthropology, ethics, literature, philosophy, religion, and sociology.

Submissions can include:

  • Scholarly articles
  • Essays sharing a personal perspective on general or controversial topics
  • Personal narratives
  • Short fiction that is engaging and thought-provoking
  • Poetry, eloquent and thoughtful, appealing to the conscience and the intellect
  • Art, in any medium, that reflects a uniqueness of style and perspective
  • Hektoen briefs
Hektoen International always wishes to expand its portfolio of BRIEFS or short articles. These have been popular with readers as being easy to read and with authors as being easy to compose. Their length may vary from as few as 200 words to mini-essays of about 1000 words. Presently shown in the Library, they will be featured in the future as a special section in the main part of the journal. There are four different types:

Art Flashes – featuring short pieces about art and artists, illness and disease, and various medical themes in the visual arts.
Literary Vignettes – consisting of extracts or quotes from literary works relating to medicine and commentaries or reviews about them.
Moments in History - featuring short pieces about notable incidents, events, trends, and developments relating to medicine and diseases.
Physicians of note – consisting of short portraits of famous physicians. Several of these have already been featured in the Gallery under Famous Physicians, but need updating and their biography expanded before being shown in the Physicians of note section in the Library.
For guidance, examples of BRIEFS or short articles may be found in the Library under the corresponding headings.

We DO NOT accept research papers, clinical studies, or unsolicited book or film reviews.

Who should submit?

Physicians, nurses, health administrators, social workers, artists and scholars of the humanities and the social sciences, students and other professionals engaged in the fields of medicine, mental health, complementary therapies, and other healing arts are welcome to submit. We also encourage patients to contribute pieces that reflect their experience and understanding of healing and health.
