The Hektoen Institute of Medicine has collaborated in recent years with the Michael Reese Research and Education Foundation in a variety of programs designed to preserve the memory of Michael Reese Hospital. Recently, the Hektoen Institute received a grant from this foundation to support Hektoen International, its online medical humanities journal. On April 6, 2010, the Hektoen Institute Society of Medical History presented a lecture on the history of Michael Reese by Dr. Charles M. Shapiro.
Because of the great interest in the history of this hospital, the Hektoen Institute has established a Michael Reese archive to preserve the legacy of this venerable Chicago institution. Michael Reese Hospital is associated with Jewish immigration and settlement to Chicago and made significant medical contributions as well as being a safe haven for Jewish doctors from Germany during World War II.
The Michael Reese archive is a work in progress. Its inaugural edition features:
Please take a look at the archive, and send us your comments if you notice any inaccuracies.
